INDOOR GREENERY OUTDOOR SPACES
Green Work Environments - At Merck's Life Science Advanced Research Center (LS ARC), greenery is an essential design element.
Across the stacked interior landscape, conifers, native perennials, grasses and multi‑storey trees reaching up to nine metres are integrated as vertical green elements. Anchored in double- and triple-height spaces, this planting turns the atria into interior courtyards—green voids that establish visual depth, anchor sightlines and articulate zones for retreat, social exchange and informal collaboration.
The compact cubic volume is strategically eroded by two deeply recessed atria that open the building to both city and campus. Generous glass roofs introduce daylight deep into the section, bringing natural light to the building’s core. On the upper levels, open floor plates create a fluid spatial continuum where laboratories, offices and communication zones are interwoven into a cohesive knowledge landscape.
The green interior becomes an orienting device and atmospheric layer, supporting well-being while fostering spontaneous interaction. Flexible spatial configurations and visual connections across floors enable horizontal and vertical permeability, reinforcing the building’s collaborative character.
Outside, a gently modelled terrain is held by two elongated, wing-shaped seating walls that define edges and choreograph movement and stay. Street trees and multi-stemmed small trees of varying species provide shade, filter views and extend ecological value by offering food sources and habitats for birds and insects. The remaining open areas are conceived as biodiversity-rich wildflower meadows with native species, creating a soft, seasonal ground plane. A continuous natural stone paving, articulated through a play of textures and finishes, structures the exterior surfaces and acts as a unifying material leitmotif along the Innovation Mile.
