A significant milestone in urban development has been reached: Construction of ICE City Erfurt has officially begun on the site of the former Erfurt freight yard. This first new building marks the beginning of the creation of a modern, forward-thinking neighbourhood that reimagines the ways we work, learn, and connect.
The project begins with earthworks and foundation works for the six-storey 'Building 1'. Despite challenging ground conditions, the project is proceeding according to schedule. From December onwards, work will continue on the floor slab and the structural framework for the stairwell towers. The building is being constructed using a sustainable hybrid wood construction method and is scheduled for completion by September 2027 at the latest.
Across approximately 10,000 square metres, modern office space is being created for Deutsche Bahn employees. The ground and first floors will be occupied by the DB Campus, a central learning and meeting place with capacity for up to 15,000 event participants per year.
'Building 1' will therefore act as a think tank for the final DB Campus, which is due to be completed in the immediate vicinity by the end of 2028. The aim is to showcase the complex railway system, preserve valuable railway knowledge and inspire and retain both new and experienced railway professionals in a sustainable way. At the same time, a hub for interaction between industry, business, research and academia is being created, with an impact that will extend far beyond the region.
With the start of construction, we are building more than just a structure; we are building a strong foundation for the future. Find out more here here.
