INDOOR GREENERY GREEN ROOFS GREEN FACADES
The two new buildings of the Federal Ministry in Berlin complement the neighbouring standalone structures, such as the Martin-Gropius-Bau, the Topography of Terror, and the Europa- und Deutschlandhaus, to form a cohesive, publicly accessible campus.
The visitor centre, city galleries, open conference floors and transparent entrance halls project the Ministry’s presence out into the city and position it as an accessible public institution.
At the core, a multi-storey atrium forms the communicative heart of the building. Galleries, terraces and loggias with open voids and planting across levels generate vertical neighbourhoods between the floors and enable a flexible, future-oriented work landscape.
A defining element is the integration of vegetation on multiple layers. The atrium, extending over all storeys, is planted with trees, perennials and grasses; green staircases with adjoining galleries introduce additional accents and stitch the levels together spatially. This vertical landscape stages nature in an urban context and, through glazed façades, establishes strong visual connections between inside and outside. Green islands structure the communal zones, offering retreats while simultaneously promoting exchange and informal encounter.
