INDOOR GREENERY OUTDOOR SPACES GREEN ROOFS GREEN FACADES

Preliminary spacial study - ICE City Deutsch Bahn Campus Erfurt

The DB Campus Erfurt is being developed on the site of the former freight depot and will be transformed into a forward-looking training and meeting centre for Deutsche Bahn by 2028. Across more than 20,000 m², the ensemble combines contemporary work and learning environments with a diverse green space concept, setting new standards for sustainability and quality of stay.

Around 40% of the historic building fabric is preserved and refurbished, while 60% is added in CO₂-neutral timber-hybrid construction. This creates a dynamic dialogue between existing and new buildings that maintains the site’s identity while delivering contemporary architecture with high ecological quality.

aplantis is responsible for the design of the interior and exterior planting as well as the open spaces. Green roofs and facades, planted courtyards and communicative atria transform the buildings into green oases. In total, around 15,000 m² of green and open space will be created, contributing to biodiversity and species protection, improving the microclimate and integrating sustainable rain- and water-management systems.

The sponge city principle with integrated rainwater management, CO₂-neutral construction, heat- and drought-resistant planting and energy-efficient systems make the DB Campus a model project for climate-resilient urban development. Green facades improve the microclimate, filter fine dust, reduce heat and create ecological habitats for insects, lizards, birds and bats.

Native trees, shrubs and perennials create near-natural planting schemes that generate changing atmospheres throughout the seasons. Open neighbourhood stairways, generous plazas and planted terraces encourage encounter and exchange, while also offering retreat spaces for relaxation and concentration.
