NRW BANK new-build high-rise - Düsseldorf – the vertical Rhine“
For the new NRW BANK building in Düsseldorf’s government district on Haroldstraße, aplantis, acting as an external partner to nuko Landschaftsarchitektur, developed a holistic greening concept that unites architecture and landscape into a single entity.
The building complex, designed by Paul Raphael Schägner and Winking - Froh Architekten, is shaped spatially, ecologically and atmospherically by its vegetation.
At the heart of the concept is the guiding idea of the “Vertical Rhine”: regional planting patterns of the Rhine floodplains are translated into the vertical dimension and structure façades, atria, roof gardens and interior spaces. Trees, climbing plants and multi-layered planting areas create fluid transitions between inside and outside and support collaborative workspaces.
The planting improves the microclimate, acoustics and air quality, supports the building’s thermal regulation and strengthens urban biodiversity. In this way, sustainability is not only implemented technically, but becomes a tangible, living part of the working environment.
